The finite, nonperiodic Toda lattice is a dynamical system that is given in Flaschka coordinates by \[ \begin{aligned} {da_n\over dt}= 2(b^2_n-b^2_{n-1}),\quad & n=1,\dots,N\\ {db_n\over dt}= b_n(a_{n+1}-a_n),\quad & n=1,\dots,N-1 \end{aligned} \tag{1} \] with \(b_0=b_N=0\). This paper deals with the two questions related to the continuous limit of the Toda lattice (1). The first concerns the long time behaviour. The second problem deals with the formation of an infinite gap solution, that is an infinite number of intervals in the support of maximizer.
