The embedding of spin groups of ordinary dimension and signature into simple superalgebras is explored in the case of extended supersymmetry [\textit{W. Nahm}, Adv. Appl. Clifford Algebras 4, Suppl. 1, 179-191 (1994); \textit{J. Strathdee}, Int. J. Modern Phys. A 2, 273-300 (1987)]. The classification of the spacetime superalgebras given in terms of the dimension \(D\) and signature \(\rho\) of spacetime [\textit{R. D'Auria, S. Ferrara, M. A. Lledó}, and \textit{V. S. Varadarajan}, J. Geom. Phys. 40, No. 2, 101-129 (2001; Zbl 0994.15031)] is generalized to the extended supersymmetry algebras with an \(R\)-symmetry group, acting on the conformal spinors. It is shown that the noncompact \(R\)-symmetry can be chosen to be compact for all the cases that are congruent mod 8 to the physical conformal algebra \(\text{so}(D-2,2)\), \(D\geq 3\). It is also found that the superconformal algebra has an \(\text{so}(1,1)\)-grading in all cases. In conclusion, the extended \(N\)-dimensional super Poincaré algebras with maximal central extension are studied.
