The paper is concerned with a Dirichlet boundary value problem involving a functional with ``free discontinuities''. One knows that such a functional attains its minimum for \(C^1\) boundary data. The authors establish a similar result for Hölder continuous data with exponent \(\mu>{1\over 2}.\) They show that this result cannot be extended to cover the case \(\mu={1\over 2}.\) The proof relies on some geometric measure theoretic properties (which are true for all the possible minimizers).
