Let \(X,Y\) be two Banach spaces such that \(Y\) is a subspace of \(X^{**}\) containing \(X\). \textit{T. Figiel, W. B. Johnson} and \textit{L. Tzafriri} [J. Approximation Theory 13, 395-412 (1975; Zbl 0307.46007)] proved that if \(\dim Y/X < \infty\) then for every \(\varepsilon >0\) there exists a lifting \(T:Y/X \rightarrow Y\) of the identity map on \(Y/X\) such that \(\|T\|<2+\varepsilon\). In this paper the authors consider the case when \(Y/X\) is separable. The main result is the following: Suppose \(E_{1},E_{2},\dots\) is a sequence of Banach spaces having the \(\lambda +\) joint uniform approximation property and \(Y\) is a subspace of \((\sum_{n}E_{n})_{\infty}\) containing \((\sum_{n}E_{n})_{0}\) and such that \(Y/(\sum_{n}E_{n})_{0}\) is separable. Then there exists a projection \(P:Y \rightarrow\) such that \(ker P = (\sum_{n}E_{n})_{0}\) and \(\|P\|\leq \lambda\). The second problem studied in this paper is the following: is it possible to strengthen the principle of local reflexivity? In this direction specific results are established. Concerning the property of a Banach space to be \(C\)-extendable locally reflexive [according to \textit{T. Oikhberg} and \textit{H. P. Rosenthal}, J. Funkt. Anal. 179, No. 2, 251-308 (2001; Zbl 1064.47072)] the authors give a negative answer to a question of \textit{H. P. Rosenthal} [J. Oper. Theory 43, No. 2, 329-374 (2000; Zbl 0992.47035)] proving that there exists a separable Banach space \(X\) with the following property: for any \(n \in \mathbb N\) there exists an \(n\)-dimensional subspace \(E\) of \(X^{**}\) such that if \(u:X^{**}\) is an operator and \(u(E) \subset X\), then \(\|(u |_{E})^{-1}\|\|u\|\geq c \sqrt{n}\), where \(c\) is a numerical constant. In the last part of this paper other interesting strengthenings of the principle of local reflexivity are discussed.
