Consider nonnegative solutions of the system \(u_t=a\Delta u+b\Delta v+f(u)g(v)\), \(v_t=d\Delta v-f(u)g(v)\) in a bounded spatial domain \(\Omega\subset\mathbb R^N\), complemented by the homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. Here \(a,b,d\) are positive constants and either \(a\geq b+d\) or \(a<d\), \(f,g\) are smooth, \(f(u),g(v)>0\) for \(u,v>0\), \(g(0)=0\) and \(\lim_{u\to+\infty}u^{-1}\log(1+f(u))=0\). The author first finds sufficient conditions on the initial data \(u_0,v_0\) under which the problem possesses a global nonnegative solution \(w(t):=(u(t),v(t))\) converging to the spatially homogeneous equilibrium \(w_\infty:=(u_\infty,0)\) given by \(u_\infty|\Omega|=\int_\Omega(u_0+v_0) dx\). Assuming further \(g(v)=v^n\), \(n\geq 1\), he studies the rate of convergence of \(w(t)\) to \(w_\infty\) in \(L^\infty\) and the asymptotic behavior of \(w(t)-\bar w(t)\) and \(w(t)-W(t)\), where \(\bar w(t)\) and \(W(t)\) denote the spatial average of \(w(t)\) and the solution of the corresponding system of ODEs, respectively. The convergence rate is exponential or of order \(t^{-1/(n-1)}\) if \(n=1\) or \(n>1\), respectively.
