The paper under review was written in November 1921(!) by the assistent algebraist Emil Artin, but never published. Why the publication was not realized is described by \textit{P. Ullrich} in [Mtt. Math. Ges. Hamb. 19, 173--194 (2000; Zbl 0985.01007)]. The paper itself is a generalization of Emil Artin's thesis. Next, we will describe a glossary of subjects contained in the paper. It contains: a detailed introduction to the objects, called Galois fields (= finite fields) encompassed with a list of properties, the Euler criterion of the quadratic reciprosity law, some theory of ideals of polynomials, classical zeta functions, Euler's \(\varphi\)-functions, irreducible polynomials, Legendre symbols, extension of these concepts especially to quadratic extensions over any finite field, norms, fundamental units, class numbers, zeta functions, discriminants, etc.. The reviewer was impressed by the clearity of presentation, as written here and also in his other publications. As usual, E. Artin's style is impeccable. Please note that the paper under review was written when E. Artin was 23 years of age! The contents of this paper, his original dissertation, and his booklet on Galois Theory, are worth studying in seminars and lectures over and over. The reviewer expresses his gratitude to the publishing board of the Hamburger Abhandlungen in publishing this work after such a long time. Excellent!
