The authors propose a new proof of the theorem on the annular separation of a matrix spectrum. This proof makes no use of the theory of entire functions and allows one to refine the upper estimate for the norm of the resolvent. The previous proof has been based on delicate inequalities in the theory of entire functions (the Cartan, Caratheodory, and Jensen inequalities) and occupies 19 pages.
