Each subgroup \(G\) of the symmetric group \(S^{n}\) together with an irreducible complex character \(\chi\) of \(G\) give rise to a projection operator which maps the \(n\)-th tensor power of a complex vector space \(V\) onto a subspace \(V^{n}_{\chi}(G)\) which is called the symmetry class of tensors associated with \(G\) and \(\chi\). If \(V\) is a unitary \(m\)-space then so is \(V^{n}_{\chi}(G)\). The author considers a particular type of orthogonal bases of \(V^{n}_{\chi}(G)\), called O-bases. Such a basis arises from an orthonormal basis of \(V\) in a natural way. The main result of the paper says that under certain conditions on \(G\) (transitive action, \(n\geq 2\)), on \(\chi\) (irreducible constituent of the permutation character of \(G\)), and on \(V\) (\(m\geq 2\)) the space \(V^{n}_{\chi}(G)\) has no O-bases. This improves a result by \textit{R. R. Holmes} [Linear Multilinear Algebra 39, No. 3, 241-243 (1995; Zbl 0831.15018)].
