The author studies how the heart of a Jordan system \(S\) defined as the intersection of all nonzero ideals of \(S\)) is inherited by local algebras and subquotients. The main tools are the simplicity of the heart, obtained in the recent paper by the same authors [``Simplicity of the heart of a nondegenerate Jordan system'', J. Pure Appl. Algebra 172, 119--137 (2002; Zbl 1032.17055)], and results on inheritance of simplicity by local algebras and subquotients, established in [J. Algebra 240, 680--704 (2001; Zbl 1008.17020)]. Concerning the question about local inheritance of the heart, a positive answer can only be obtained for algebras and pairs (triple systems have a traditionally worse behaviour concerning the inheritance of regularity conditions by local algebras, and the inheritance of the heart is not an exception). To obtain the subquotient inheritance of the heart, a study of the interaction of subquotients and ideals is needed.
