This paper deals with the constitutive theory of transversally isotropic hyperelastic materials undergoing large deformations. Based on the phenomenological approach, the authors propose several general stored energy functions which (1) are valid for pure isotropic materials, and (2) are able to describe correctly incompressible transversely isotropic materials in the range of small deformations, too. Further, the authors discuss several models proposed in the literature and demonstrate that part of them is insufficient to properly describe soft tissue behaviour.
