The author previously determined which complex finite-dimensional Lie algebras have non-trivial skew-symmetric solutions of the classical Yang-Baxter equation [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 134, 1-14 (1999; Zbl 0933.17008)]. In the paper under review, he obtains the analogous result for real finite-dimensional Lie algebras \(L\). The condition is that \(L\) be non-abelian and not one of three specific Lie algebras of dimension three. This is also equivalent to the classical Yang-Baxter equation having a non-trivial solution with \(L\)-invariant symmetric part. The result is reformulated and proved in terms of the existence of non-trivial (quasi-) triangular Lie bialgebra structures on \(L\).
