The paper is concerned with a posteriori error estimates for Galerkin approximations to boundary integral equation of the first kind, with particular emphasis on Symm's integral equation which is mathematically equivalent to the inverse problem of a Dirichlet problem for the Laplace equation. The results are based on the residual of the approximation, and provide estimates for the error in a dual Sobolev norm. The main analytic tool for proving the estimates is a localization argument via partition of unity. The local error indicators generated by the estimates are used for adaptive mesh refinement strategies. A numerical example with an L-shaped surface illustrates the results.
