Denote by \({\mathbb{B}}_n\) the open unit ball of \({\mathbb{C}}^n\) and by \({\mathbf H}({\mathbb{B}}_n)\) the reproducing kernel space corresponding to the function \(1/(1-zw^*)\). Let us stress at this point that \({\mathbf H}({\mathbb{B}}_n)\) is not the classical Hardy space \(H^2({\mathbb{B}}_n)\). This paper is a very interesting, carefully, detailed and well-written study of the subspaces of \({\mathbf H}({\mathbb{B}}_n)\) which are invariant under the resolvent operators, also called backward-shift operators, defined to be the adjoints of the operators \(T_j(a)\), which in turn are defined for every \(a \in {\mathbb{B}}_n\) and \(j \leq n\), by \([T_j(a) f](z):= z_j f(z)/(1-za^*)\). The main result is that if \(M\) is a finite-dimensional resolvent-invariant subspace of \({\mathbf H}({\mathbb{B}}_n)\), then \(M\) has a reproducing kernel of the form \((1-B(z)B(w)^*)/(1-zw^*)\) where \(B(z)\) is a rational, matrix-valued function. However, there are many other interesting features in this paper, like the definition of suitable extensions of Blaschke factors, the solution of Gleason's problem in \({\mathbf H}({\mathbb{B}}_n)\), and the study of homogeneous interpolation problems both in \({\mathbf H}({\mathbb{B}}_n)\) and in the Hardy space \(H^2({\mathbb{B}}_n)\).
