The authors study a nonlinear partial differential equation called the viscous Moore-Greitzer equation, which gives a model of air flow through turbomachines. They concentrate their attention on a component of the basic attractor, the stall. It corresponds to a phenomenon in which there are regions of relatively low but reversed air flow at isolated locations around the rim of the compressor, so that the perfomance of the engine is reduced since a large stress on its components is caused. Explicit stall solutions are derived and their stability is analyzed. Numerical simulation results are also presented to show the shape and evolution of stall cells over large parameter regions.
