Accurate radiation boundary conditions for the two-dimensional wave equation on unbounded domains (Q5956799)

A recursive sequence of radiation boundary conditions for the time dependent wave equation in a two-dimensional exterior region given by \textit{T. Hagstrom} and \textit{S. I. Harihan} [Appl. Numer. Math. 27, No.~4, 403-416 (1998; Zbl 0924.35167)] is rederived from the hierarchy of local boundary conditions of \textit{A. Bayliss} and \textit{E. Turkel} [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 33, 707-725 (1980; Zbl 0453.35052)] and formulated in terms of local boundary operators. Both implementations are shown to fit into a standard finite element discretization. Numerical studies are included.
