This is a very well written article, containing besides some first class-results, the history of the question, prospective open problems, and some thoughtful comments. The main aim of this work is to provide us with two sophisticated examples of an ascending HNN extension of a finitely generated residually finite group, which is not residually finite. One of these examples constructs an ascending HNN extension of a finitely generated residually finite group, which is not Hopfian (i.e. this group is not isomorphic to a proper quotient). Another example is about an ascending HNN extension of a finitely generated residually finite group with very few quotients, which is not residually finite.
