Effective descent morphisms in the category \textbf{Top} of topological spaces were characterized by \textit{J. Reiterman} and the reviewer [Topology Appl. 57, No. 1, 53-69 (1994; Zbl 0829.54011)] who also provided the first example of a descent map (=pullback stable quotient map) which fails to be effective, all expressed in terms of the ultrafilter convergence relation. This paper establishes a very simple finite counterexample. Furthermore, the author shows that the effective descent morphisms (which, by definition, refer to the basic fibration of \textbf{Top}, given by all continuous maps into a base space) can be described equivalently as those surjective morphisms that are effective for descent with respect to the subfibrations given by either the bijections or the surjections onto a base space.
