The paper considers multirate, loss networks in communication systems. An arriving call, offered to route \(r\) of the network is lost, if there is insufficient bandwith available on any link of this route \(r\). It is assumed, that there are \(R\) fixed routes and that call arrivals (of service type \(s)\) on route \(r\) are Poisson-distributed. The holding period of a call of service type \(s\) on route \(r\) has an arbitrary, unspecified distribution with finite mean and is indepent of earlier arrivals and holding times. The author determines asymptotic approximations of the loss probabilities and the long-run average revenue for the network. Then the sensitivity of the revenue with respect to changes in the link capacities is of main interest. First a single link is analysed, afterwards every link gets a small change in capacity (of arbitrary sign) and the difference in revenue is asymptotically approximated in explicit form (valid in all cases of overloaded, critically loaded and underloaded links). This result can be used, to optimize allocation of resources and routes for virtual private networks.
