By compressing the numerical range (NR) of a linear pencil of n-by-n matrices into that of 2-by-2 pencils, it is shown that the boundary of NR of 2-by-2 pencils lies on a rational curve of degree of at most 4 and, by using the Lagrange multiplier and implicit functions, the boundary of NR for general 2-by-2 matrices is described.
