Let \(\psi\) be a compactly supported closed differential form on a face \(e\) of the Borel-Serre boundary of an arithmetic quotient \(\Gamma\setminus X\) of a symmetric space \(X\). Then \(e\) belongs to a parabolic \(P\) and \(\psi\) can be extended to a compactly supported form on \(\Gamma\cap P\setminus X\). One then defines the pseudo-Eisenstein series \(E(\psi)= \sum_{\gamma\in \Gamma/ \Gamma\cap P} (\gamma^{-1})^*\psi\), which is a closed form of compact support on \(\Gamma \setminus X\). The paper is concerned with the question whether the form \(E(\psi)\) represents a nontrivial cohomology class. Using results of J. Schwermer it is shown that these classes span the Poincaré dual of the regular Eisenstein forms which are defined in a similar way but starting with a noncompactly supported form which results in the necessity of the Eisenstein series being regularized, so that the value in question is only attained after analytic continuation.
