The authors study existence, uniqueness, and positivity of minimizers or critical points of the function \[ \mathcal J_\lambda(u)=\frac 1p \int_\Omega F(u,Du) dx - \frac {\lambda}p \int_\Omega |u|^p dx - \int_\Omega f(x)u dx, \] where \(p>1\) is a constant, and \(F\) is \(p\)-homogeneous, strictly convex and of class \(C^1\) with respect to both of its arguments. The parameter \(\lambda\) is less than the first eigenvalue of the homogeneous functional \[ \mathcal J(u)=\frac 1p \int_\Omega F(u,Du) dx \] on \(W^{1,p}_0\). Of course, the analysis includes the special case of the \(p\)-Laplace operator (that is, \(F(u,Du)=|Du|^p\)), but the examples show that the method applies to other interesting equations as well.
