The paper under review is a continuation of [\textit{K.~Ciesielski}, Real Anal. Exch. 26, No. 2, 919--922 (2001; Zbl 1009.28004)]. The following results are shown. (1) For each \(A\subset {\mathbb R}\) there is a subset \(A_0\subset A\) such that \(A_0+A_0\) has inner measure zero and outer measure the same as \(A+A\). (2) There is a subset \(C_0\) of the Cantor middle third set \(C\) such that \(C_0+C_0\) is Bernstein in \([0,2]\). (3) There is a perfect set \(P\) such that \(P+P\) is an interval \(I\) and there is no subset \(P_0\subset P\) with \(P_0+P_0\) Bernstein in \(I\).
