With the natural action of \(\text{Sp}_4(q)\) (\(q\) even) on a 4-dimensional space \(V\), denote by \(\Gamma\) the stabilizer of a 1-dimensional subspace. Then \(\Gamma\) is a maximal subgroup of \(\text{Sp}_4(q)\) and the purpose of the present paper is to determine its complex characters. The authors express \(\Gamma\) explicitly as a semidirect product of a (normal) unipotent matrix group \(N\) and \(\text{GL}(2,q)\). Using this, they are able to give an equally explicit determination of the characters of \(\Gamma\). It turns out that there are \(q^2+2q+2\) of them and formulae are given for writing down their values.
