The purpose of the paper is to give an analytic characterization of symmetric Siegel domains. Let \(D\) be an irreducible homogeneous Siegel domain in a complex Euclidean vector space \(Z\). Regarding \(Z\) as a tangent space, one has a norm on \(Z\) which is induced by the Bergman metric on \(D\) and one transfers the norm to the ambient complex vector space of the image \(\mathcal C(D)\) of \(D\) under the Cayley transform \(\mathcal C\). It is known that there is a split solvable Lie group \(G\) acting simply transitively on \(D\). The theorem is formulated by varying the norms through admissible linear forms on the corresponding normal \(j\)-algebra. In section 1, the author presents some basic facts about \(j\)-algebras, Siegel domains and the Cayley transformation \(\mathcal C\). Sections 2 and 3 are of computational nature, section 4 presents norm computations and the main theorem is stated in section 5. Sections 6-12 are devoted to prove that the following norm equality: \[ ||\mathcal C(g.e)||= ||\mathcal C(g^{-1}.e|| \] for \(e\in D\) a reference point, holds for any \(g \in G\) if and only if \(D\) is symmetric. The first step is to reduce \(D\) to a quasisymmetric domain and then by using a certain criterion (for normal \(j\)-algebras and a representation of the corresponding complexified Jordan algebra) one gets the symmetric domain.
