This comprehensive book is devoted to asymptotic modelling of fluid flows, mainly Newtonian laminar fluid flows. The main idea is that various asymptotic models for Newtonian fluid flows can be obtained systematically as significant degeneracies of the so-called Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations governing compressible and thermally conducting viscous fluid flows. Practically, it happens so that various dimensionless parameters (Reynolds, Strouhal, Mach, Prandtl, Froude, Boussinesq etc.) and various ratios of lengths and times are often small or large perturbation parameters. This allows to apply in a regular way the apparatus of abstract asymptotic analysis (asymptotic expansions, matched asymptotic expansions, multiple scale methods, homogenization methods and so on) to fluid modelling. The main purpose of the book is to describe the modelling and not finding solutions. The author does not agree with the point of view that the tremendous increase in capabilities of numerical simulation makes the asymptotic modelling obsolete. On the contrary, since the asymptotic modelling makes the problem amenable to a symplified analysis, it allows to find an appropriate numerical methodology to solve the problem with reasonable computer costs. Thus the author believes that ``for some time the growth in capabilities of numerical simulation will be dependent on, or at least related to, the development of asymptotic modelling''. Contents: Part I: 1. Introductory comments and summary; 2. Newtonian fluid flow: Equations and conditions; 3. Some basic aspects of asymptotic analysis and modelling; 4. Useful limiting forms of the Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations. Part II: 5. The Navier-Fourier viscous incompressible model; 6. The inviscid Euler model and some hydroaerodynamic problems; 7. Boundary-layer models for high Reynolds numbers; 8. Some models of nonlinear acoustics; 9. Low-Reynolds number asymptotics. Part III: 10. Asymptotic modelling of thermal convection and interfacial phenomena; 11. Meteo-fluid-dynamics model; 12. Singular coupling and the triple-deck model. References (approximately 700 items).
