Finite element matrix sequences: the case of rectangular domains (Q5959257)

Consider a homogeneous elliptic problem of order \(2k\) with a variable coefficient which is posed over a rectangular domain. In previous papers, the authors have developed preconditioning strategies for matrices obtained in the finite difference approximation of such a problem. In this work, they extend these preconditioning methods to finite element approximations of these elliptic problems. The study includes theoretical results, various numerical experiments and a comparison with other preconditioning methods in the literature.
