A model-based approach is proposed for the monitoring of telecommunication networks. Based on the ``diagnoser approach'', starting from a discrete-event model of the network adapted to simulating faults, the present approach consists in transforming the model into a finite automaton, called a diagnoser, designed to analyze on-line the stream of alarms. Some of the main contributions are: Extension of the diagnoser approach to deal with communicating finite state machines, to take into account temporal information and to overcome the case of masked alarms. An application to the diagnosis of the largest French packet switching network is given.
