In the present paper an interesting technique for matching a given stationary axisymmetric perfect fluid solution to a not necessarily asymptotically flat vacuum exterior solution is described. In order to handle this problem the field equations are rewritten in a convenient way, which lead to the Ernst equation for a complex potential. The matching data between the different metric components on the zero pressure surface then determine the \(2\times 2\) monodromy matrix which depends on a complex parameter. The analytic properties of the monodromy matrix can be used to determine the asymptotic behaviour of the solution. It is also possible to construct the exterior solution from the monodromy matrix. The Schwarzschild interior solution and the Winicour dust solution are used to illustrate the procedure. It is worth to notice that the latter one seems to be not asymptotically flat, but so far a rigorous proof cannot be given.
