Galloping of tall structures in steady fluid flow is an important mechanism of a self-excited oscillatory process. The author extends this mechanism in assuming that the fluid flow is not steady but time varying. Since a real gusty wind is a random process, which however can be modelled by a series of harmonic terms, the author studies, in order to have a clear insight into the qualitative behaviour, only one additional harmonic term to the steady flow. By means of multiple scale method, the author examines the effects of primary and secondary resonances. The analytical results are compared with numerical simulations and are shown to be quite accurate.
