The author investigates the parametric resonance of a van der Pol oscillator under state feedback control with a time delay employing the asymptotic perturbation method. He obtains two slow-flow equations on the amplitude and phase of the oscillator whose fixed points correspond to a periodic motion for the starting system, and then he shows the parametric excitation-response and frequency-response curves. He analyzes the effect of time delay and feedback gains from the viewpoint of vibration control and employs energy considerations to examine the existence and characteristics of limit cycles of the slow-flow equations. He verifies his analytical results with numerical simulations, and suggests the appropriate choices for the feedback gains and the time delay in order to exclude the possibility of quasi-periodic motion and to reduce the amplitude peak of the parametric resonance.
