The authors consider performance criteria and a design approach for nonlinear vibration absorbers for nonlinear systems having multiple degrees of freedom. Motivated by work of \textit{J. C. Slater} [``Nonlinear modal control'', Ph.D. thesis, State U. of New York at Buffalo (1993)] and \textit{J. C. Slater} and \textit{D. J. Inman} [J. Guid. Control Dyn. 18, No. 3, 433--440 (1995; Zbl 0828.70018)], the authors develop the following approach: 1. Find the system of equations of motion; 2. Use nonlinear normal modes to transform the equations of motion to modal coordinates; 3. Design the vibration absorber in modal coordinates for the two--dimensional modal manifold being excited (it is assumed that the mode of interest is not in internal resonance); 4. Evaluate the response by transforming the modal coordinates back to physical coordinates using nonlinear normal mode theory. To illustrate the design process, an example of \textit{S. W. Shaw} and \textit{C. Pierre} [J. Sound Vib. 164, No. 1, 85--124 (1993; Zbl 0925.70235)] is used.
