Let \(\varphi: M\to \mathbb E^m\) be an immersion from an \(n\)-dimensional connected Riemannian manifold \(M\) into the Euclidean \(m\)-space. If \(\Delta\) is the Laplacian operator of the induced metric \(g\) of \(M\), then the immersion \(\varphi\) is of finite type if its position vector field \(\varphi\) of \(M\) in \(\mathbb E^m\) can be expressed as a finite sum \(\varphi=\sum_i \varphi_i\) of eigenfunctions \(\varphi_i\) of \(\Delta\), where the non-constant maps \(\varphi_i\) satisfy \(\Delta \varphi_i=\lambda_i\varphi _i\). If all eigenvalues \(\lambda_i\) are different, then \(\varphi\) is said to be of \(k\)-type. Similarly, a smooth map \(\varphi: M\to \mathbb E^m\) of an \(n\)-dimensional submanifold \(M\) of \(\mathbb E^m\) is of finite type if \(\varphi\) is a finite sum of \(\mathbb E^m\)-valued eigenfunctions of \(\Delta\). Now let \(G : M\to G_{n,m}\subset\Lambda^n\mathbb E^m\) be the Gauss map of \(M\), where \(G_{n,m}\) is the Grassmannian manifold consisting of all oriented \(n\)-planes through the origin of \(\mathbb E^m\). In this paper, the author studies the rotation surfaces with finite type Gauss map in \(\mathbb E^4\) and proves that if \(M\) is a flat rotation surface in the Euclidean 4-space \(\mathbb E^4\), then the Gauss map \(G\) is of finite type if and only if \(M\) is the Clifford torus, i.e., it is the product \(S^1(r)\times S^1(r)\) of two plane circles of the same radius.
