Let \(C_{2\pi}\) denote the Banach space of \(2\pi\)-periodic continuous functions defined on \(\mathbb{R}\), where \(C_{2\pi}\) is endowed with the uniform norm. Let \(\mathcal R_n\) denote the set of all trigonometric rational functions with real coefficients and of degree at most \(n\). For \(f\in C_{2\pi}\) the best approximation of \(f\) is defined by \(\displaystyle{R_n(f):=\inf\{||f-r||: r\in \mathcal R_n\}}\), \(n=0,1,2,\cdots\). The main result of this paper is the following theorem. Let \(\{a_n\}_{n=0}^{\infty}\) be a strictly decreasing sequence of nonnegative numbers converging to zero. Then there exists an odd function \(f\in C_{2\pi}\) such that \(R_n(f)=a_n\) for \(n=0,1,2,\cdots\). The proof of this theorem is based on the Schauder fixed-point principle.
