The \(N\)-Kolmogorov width of a symmetric set \(W\) in a Banach space \(X\) is the number \[ d_N(W,X)=\inf_P \sup_{x\in W}\inf_{y\in P}\|x-y\|_X \] where the first infimum is taken over all linear subspaces of dimension at most \(N\). The author estimates from below and above the width of periodic Besov classes of mixed derivatives \(B^r_{p,\theta} (\mathbb{T}^d)\) in the space \(L_q(\mathbb{T}^d)\), \(r\in\mathbb{R}^d_+\), \(1<p\), \(q<\infty\), \(0<\theta \leq\infty\). The problem is solved not for all parameters \(p,q\) and \(r\). In particular, the problem remains unsolved for small smoothness. It is claimed that the approach can be used for widths of corresponding Sobolev classes as well as for other widths (Alexandroff, linear, projective widths).
