    The authors investigate a nonlinear wave equation with the Kirchhoff-Carrier operator \(u_{tt}-(b_0+B(\|\nabla u\|^2))\Delta u=f(x,t,u,u_x,u_t)\), \(x\in \Omega=(0,1)\), \(\nabla u=u_x\), \(0<t<T,\) \(u(0,t)=u(1,t)=0\), \(u(x,0)=\tilde u_0(x)\), \(u_t(x,0)=\tilde u_1(x),\) where \( b_0>0\), \(B(\|\nabla u\|^2))=\int_\Omega |\nabla u(x,t)|^2 dx.\) A weak solution of the problem for sufficiently small \(T\) is determined as the limit of the recurrent sequence \(\{u_m\}\) with functions defined as variational solutions of the linear problems \(\ddot u_m(t)-(b_0+B_m(t))\Delta u_m(t)=F_m(t),\) \(u_m(0,t)=u_m(1,t)=0\), \(u_m(x,0)=\tilde u_0(x)\), \(\dot u_m(x,0)=\tilde u_1(x),\) where \(B_m(t)=B(\|\nabla u_{m-1}(t)\|^2)\), \(F_m(x,t)=f(x,t,u_{m-1}(t),\nabla u_{m-1}(t),\dot u_{m-1}(t)).\) The Galerkin method in the space \(H_0^1(\Omega)\) is used for solving the corresponding linear wave initial-boundary value problem. An asymptotic expansion of order \(2\) in \(\varepsilon\) is obtained with a right-hand side of the form \(f(x,t,u,u_x,u_t) + \varepsilon f_1(x,t,u,u_x,u_t)\) and with \(B+\varepsilon B_1\) instead of \(B\) for \(\varepsilon\) sufficiently small.
