Let \(K\) be an algebraically closed field and let \(R\) be a basic connected finite dimensional hereditary \(K\)-algebra of wild representation type. We denote by \(\text{mod}(R)\) the category of finite dimensional right \(R\)-modules. We recall that the indecomposable finite dimensional right \(R\)-modules split into three classes: preprojective, preinjective and regular modules. The full subcategory of \(\text{mod}(R)\) formed by the regular modules is closed under epimorphic images and extensions, but, contrary to the tame situation, is not closed under kernels. A nonzero regular module \(E\) is said to be elementary if there is no nontrivial regular submodule \(X\) of \(E\) such that \(E/X\) is regular. It follows that each nonzero regular module \(X\) admits a filtration \(0=X_0\subset X_1\subset\ldots\subset X_r=X\) with elementary composition factors \(X_j/X_{j-1}\). It is proved in the paper that the number of Coxeter orbits of dimension vectors of finite dimensional elementary \(R\)-modules is finite. Moreover \(\dim_K\text{Ext}^1_R(E,E)\geq 2\) for any finite dimensional elementary \(R\)-module \(E\). It is also shown that there exist infinitely many connected algebras whose elementary modules are indecomposable without self-extensions. In this case the number of \(\tau\)-orbits of finite dimensional elementary \(R\)-modules is finite, where \(\tau=DTr\) is the Auslander-Reiten translation in the category \(\text{mod}(R)\).
