The paper proposes a unified linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach to the design of reduced-order controllers for both continuous and discrete-time singular \(H^\infty\) control problems. For the singular case, where the direct feedthrough from the input to the error and from the exogeneous signal to the output are no longer of full rank, the authors proved, for both the continuous and the discrete-time cases, that there exists reduced-order controllers with orders less than the generalized plant order if the singular \(H^\infty\) control problems are solvable. The paper gives an algorithm for constructing the controllers. Using no assumption about zeros on the \(j\omega\)-axis or zeros in the unit circle, the paper shows that reduced-order controllers can actually be found by solving LMI problems and directly using matrix algebra.
