This monograph gives a unified systematic theory of the class of complete second order linear differential equations y''(t)+Ay'(t)+By(t)=0 in Hilbert spaces. The theory is developed in the special but important case when \(A\) and \(B\) are arbitrary commuting normal operators in a separable Hilbert space \(H\) with no other restrictions. This class of equations covers naturally all equations where \(A\) and \(B\) are linear differential operators with constant complex-valued coefficients in \(H=L^2\left( \mathbb{R}^m\right) ,\) for any \(m\geq 1\). The following subjects are considered: well-posedness of the Cauchy problem as well as the Dirichlet and Neumann problems; initial (boundary) conditions ensuring the solvability of initial (boundary) value problems; boundary behavior and extension of solutions on a finite interval; stability and stabilization of solutions at infinity; boundary-value problems on a half-line. Answers to all posed questions are given in the form of necessary and sufficient conditions. These conditions look quite simple and clear and can be applied immediately to some important specific situations. Some new effects arise which do not take place for first order or incomplete second order equations. All these results are obtained by systematic application of the classical spectral theory of pairs of commuting normal operators in Hilbert space. The presentation in the monograph is self-contained. The prerequisite for its understanding is the knowledge of a first course in functional analysis and operator theory, in particular the spectral theory for self-adjoint and normal operators in Hilbert space. The book ends with a list of 389 references, an index and a list of symbols. The monograph is a valuable reference book for postgraduate students and research mathematicians in analysis and differential equations.
