The authors say that a function \(h(z)\) is slowly varying if \(h(z)\) is analytic and nonzero on the half plane \(H\equiv \{z;\text{Re} z> 1/2\}\), and if \(\omega(z)= zh'(z)/h(z) \to 0\) as \(z\to \infty\) with \(z\) in \(H\). (There are a number of omissions of words, letters and numbers in this printed version.) This definition implies that for each \(\lambda>0\), \(h(\lambda z)/h(z) \to 1\) as \(z\to \infty\) within \(H\). The paper is largely concerned with the asymptotics of the Taylor coefficients \(\{f_n\}\) of \(f(z)= g(z)(1-z)^{-\alpha}\) where \(\alpha>0\), where \(g\) satisfies certain conditions as \(z\to 1\). For example, if \(h(z)\) and \(\omega(z)\), as above, are bounded in absolute value, and \[ g(z)= h\bigl((1-z)^{-1} \bigr),\quad \text{then} \quad f_n\sim n^{\alpha-1} h(n)/ \Gamma (\alpha). \] This is a generalization of the usual real-variable Karamata-type Tauberian theorem (e.g. the reviewer's paper ``Regularly varying functions'' (1976; Zbl 0324.26002)].
