Let \(S=\{z_{nk}\}\), \(k=1,\dots,n\), \(n=1,2,\dots\), be a triangular array of points in the open unit disk \(D\) of the complex plane. Define \(B_{n0}=1\) and \(B_{nk}\) the Blaschke product with zeros \(z_{nk}\), \(k=1,\dots,n\), and \({\mathcal L}_n=\text{span} \{B_{nk}\), \(k=0,\dots,n\}\). If \(\mu\) is a positive Borel measure on \([0,2\pi)\), let \(\phi_{nk}\), \(k=0,\dots,n\), be obtained by orthogonalization of the basis \(B_{nk}\) in \(L^2(d\mu)\), the Hilbert space with inner product \((f,g)=\int_0^{2\pi} f(e^{i\theta}) \overline{g(e^{i\theta})} d\mu(\theta)\). The rational functions \(\phi_{nk}\) generalize the Szegö polynomials \(\phi_k\) in the sense that if all \(z_{nk}=0\), then \(\phi_{nk}= \phi_k\). This paper studies the convergence of \(\phi^*_n(z)= B_{n,n}(z) \overline{\phi_{n,n}(1/\overline{z})}\) as \(n\to \infty\) while it is assumed that \(\log\mu'\in L_1\) and \(S\) is in a compact subset of \(D\). The main result is that these conditions are necessary and sufficient for \(\phi^*_n(z) (1-\overline{z}_{n,n}z)(1-|z_{n,n}|^2)^{-1/2}\) to converge locally uniformly in \(D\) to the inverse of the spectral factor of \(\mu\). Several other equivalent convergence conditions are also given. This result is well known for the polynomial case. Similar results were obtained by \textit{A. Bultheel}, \textit{P. Gonzalez-Vera}, \textit{E. Hendriksen} and \textit{O. Njåstad} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 346, No. 1, 307-329 (1994; Zbl 0814.42012)] and in \textit{X. Li} and \textit{K. Pan} [J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 53, No. 2, 289-301 (1996; Zbl 0853.30026)]. Related results can be found in \textit{K. Pan} [J. Comput. Appl. Math. 62, No. 3, 321-331 (1996; Zbl 0852.42010)].
