The article extends previous concepts and ideas of the work by the author [Nonlinear stability of structures, CISM Course Lect. 342, 73-95 (1995; Zbl 0834.73025)] on the nonlinear dynamic buckling of single-degree-of-freedom systems to the case of multi-degree-of-freedom systems. The analysis is focused on the combined effect of geometric or material nonlinearities and on the structural (viscous) damping. Mainly, the author considers the mechanism of dynamic buckling and the determination of approximate dynamic buckling loads for dissipative systems.
