The authors introduce a specific finite element method in order to solve linear elliptic partial differential equations on bounded domains with discontinuities in the normal derivatives across some interfaces. They construct the approximation of the singularity solving a simple eigenvalue problem. Then they use this approximation along with the standard finite element basis functions to get the singular finite element space. Some numerical experiments are carried out in order to underline the effectiveness of the method. However, it is worth noting that the method depends essentially on the shape of the assumed domain because the method explicitly uses a separation of variables which leads to a standard eigenvalue problem. Unfortunately, it is well known that this technique does not work for an arbitrary domain.
