Let \(H\) be a complex Hilbert space of dimension at least \(2\) and let \(B(H)\) be the algebra of all bounded linear operators on \(H\). A subalgebra \({\mathcal A}\subseteq B(H)\) which contains the identity operator and all finite rank operators in \(B(H)\) is said to be a standard subalgebra of \(B(H)\). If, additionally, \(A^{*}\in{\mathcal A}\) whenever \(A\in {\mathcal A}\), then \({\mathcal A}\) is called a \(\ast\)-standard subalgebra. The main result of the paper says that a bijective mapping \(\Phi\) on a \(\ast\)-standard subalgebra \({\mathcal A}\) of \(B(H)\) satisfies \(\Phi(AB-BA^{*})=\Phi(A)\Phi(B)-\Phi(B)\Phi(A)^{*}\), for all \(A, B\in{\mathcal A}\), if and only if there is a unitary or conjugate unitary operator on \(H\) such that \(\Phi(A)=UAU^{*}\) for all \(A\in{\mathcal A}\).
