Although every semigroup embeds in a regular semigroup, via the `Cayley' representation, it is useful to pursue embeddings that preserve as much of the structure of the original semigroup as possible. In an earlier paper [Commun. Algebra 37, No. 8, 2920-2932 (2009; Zbl 1194.20055)], the author constructed an embedding of an arbitrary semigroup \(S\) in a regular semigroup \(\mathcal R(S)\) such that the restrictions of the Green's relations on \(\mathcal R(S)\) are those on \(S\) and the subgroups of \(\mathcal R(S)\) are subgroups of the Schützenberger groups of \(S\). The semigroup \(\mathcal R(S)\) is a quotient of the regular semigroup \(\mathcal C(S)\) constructed by \textit{D. B. McAlister} [J. Lond. Math. Soc. 43, 355-366 (1968; Zbl 0155.04101)]. In the paper under review, the author improves his earlier result by taking a further quotient of \(\mathcal R(S)\). The resulting semigroup inherits the embedding properties of \(\mathcal R(S)\) but is now finite if \(S\) itself is.
