By a method of the authors [Abstr. Appl. Anal. 2013, Article ID 818907, 7 p. (2013; Zbl 1276.42026)] to generate wavelet frames, the authors construct smooth compactly supported tight wavelet frames and refinable functions with good approximation properties in \(L^2({\mathbb R}^2)\), associated to the quincunx matrix \(R\). First, the authors construct two families of tight wavelet frames associated to \(R\) with five generators. Similar results hold for the dilation matrix \(B\). Later another family of tight wavelet frames associated to \(R\) with three generators is presented. Finally, the authors construct two families of tight wavelet frames associated to \(R\) with only two generators. All the generators have compact support, any desired degree of smoothness and vanishing moments. The main difference between these families is that while the refinable functions associated to the five generators have many symmetries, the refinable functions used in the other families are merely even.
