The main result of the paper under review asserts that Hall algebras of finitary exact categories are generated by indecomposable objects. Additionally, it is shown that, for profinitary and cofinitary exact categories, their Hall algebras are generated by primitive elements, with respect to the natural comultiplication. Moreover, it is shown that the latter generating set is minimal. The paper contains a detailed study and comparison of profinitary and cofinitary exact categories. At the end of the paper, the authors introduce certain primitively generated subalgebras of Hall algebras and conjecture an analogue of the Lie correspondence in the corresponding setup.
