The author studies the twistor space of a \(4k\)-dimensional quaternionic manifold \(M\). He shows that if the twistor space of \(M\) is a Fano manifold, then \(M\) admits a reduction to \(\mathrm{Sp}(1) \times \mathrm{GL}(k,\mathbb H)\) if and only if \(M = \mathbb H P^k\). Moreover, he proves that either \(b_2(M) =0\) or \(M=\mathrm{Gr}_2(k + 2,\mathbb C)\). In this way he obtains a generalisation of two previous results of \textit{S. Salamon} [Invent. Math. 67, 143--171 (1982; Zbl 0486.53048)] and \textit{C. R. Le Brun} [``On the topology of quaternionic manifolds'', Twistor Newsl. 32, 6--7 (1991)], respectively, under the assumption that \(M\) is a complete quaternionic-Kähler manifold with positive scalar curvature.
