The authors study the notions of partial isometries, normal partial isometries and generalised projections in the setting of so-called semi-Hilbertian spaces. A semi-Hilbertian space is a Hilbert space \(H\) endowed with a semi-inner product \(\langle\cdot,\cdot\rangle_A\) given by \(\langle x,y\rangle_A=\langle Ax, y\rangle\) (\(x,y\in H\)), where \(A\) is a positive bounded linear operator on \(H\). At the core of the paper lie several results describing the extent to which certain characterizations can be carried across from the classical Hilbert space setting to the semi-Hilbertian case. These general results are then applied in the final section of the paper to describe the set of so-called \(A\)-projections, which are operators acting as orthogonal projections onto a closed subspace when \(H\) is endowed with the semi-norm induced by \(\langle\cdot,\cdot\rangle_A\).
