The relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system is studied \[ \partial_tf+\hat p\cdot\nabla_xf+(E+{\hat p}\times B)\cdot\nabla_pf=0, \] \[ \partial_tE=\nabla_x\times B-j,\quad\partial_tB=-\nabla_x\times E, \] \[ \nabla_x\cdot E=\rho,\quad\nabla_x\cdot B=0, \] where \(t\in\mathbb R\), \(x\in\mathbb R^{d_x}\) and \(p\in\mathbb R^{d_p}\) are time, spatial and momentum variables, respectively; \(f=f(t,x,p)\) is the particle density, \(E=E(t,x)\) is the electric field, \(B=B(t,x)\) is the magnetic field, the charge and the current are given by the following relations: \[ \begin{aligned}\rho(t,x) & =4\pi\int_{\mathbb R^{d_p}}f(t,x,p)\,dp,\\ j_i(t, x) &= 4 \pi \int_{\mathbb R^{d_p}}\hat p_i f(t, x, p) \, dp,\quad i = \overline{1, d_p}.\end{aligned} \] and \[ \hat p=\frac{p}{p_0},\quad p_0=\sqrt{1+|p|^2}. \] The authors study three different cases. {\parindent=6mm \begin{itemize} \item[1.] The two-dimensional case, when the spatial and the momentum variables are two-dimensional. \item [2.] The two-and-a-half dimensional case, when there are two spatial and three momentum dimensions. \item [3.] The full three-dimensional case, when the both spatial and momentum variables are three-dimensional. \end{itemize}} For the first two cases, the authors prove the global existence, uniqueness and regularity of the solution of the initial value problem for the regular initial data with polynomial decay in the momentum space. Note that for the case of the compact momentum support, similar results were obtained before by \textit{R. Glassey} and \textit{J. Schaeffer} [Commun. Math. Phys. 185, No. 2, 257--284 (1997; Zbl 0883.35118); Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 141, No. 4, 331--374 (1998; Zbl 0907.76100)]. In the present paper, the compact momentum support of the initial data is not required. For the full three-dimensional case, the authors show that a regular solution can be extended as long as \(\| p_0^{\theta}\|_{L_x^1L_p^1}\) remains finite for \(\theta>\frac{2}{q}\), \(2<q\leq\infty\). The following strategy is used for the proofs. First, using the energy method, the authors prove the local existence and uniqueness of the solutions and obtain some continuation criteria for them. These criteria requires \(f\), \(E\), \(B\) and their derivatives to be bounded in some norms. Then the continuation criteria are improved to require only the control of \(E\) and \(B\). Further the authors apply Strichartz estimates, moment bounds and the Glassey-Strauss/Glassey-Schaeffer representation of the electromagnetic fields, in order to conclude the main theorems.
