The author studies the Haefliger invariant for long embeddings of \({\mathbb R}^{4k-1}\) into \({\mathbb R}^{6k}\) in terms of the self-intersections of their projections to \({\mathbb R}^{6k-1}\), under the condition that the projection is a generic long immersion of \({\mathbb R}^{4k-1}\) into \({\mathbb R}^{6k-1}\). He defines the notion of \textsl{crossing changes} of the embeddings at the self-intersections and describes the change of the isotopy classes under crossing changes, using the linking number of the double point sets in \({\mathbb R}^{4k-1}\) to define an invariant. The invariant is a high-dimensional analogue to the order 2 invariant for classical knots defined by \textit{X.-S. Lin} and \textit{Z. Wang} [J. Differ. Geom. 44, No. 1, 74--95 (1996; Zbl 0937.53006)], derived from projections of the knots to generic plane curves. Inspired by work of \textit{J. S. Birman} and \textit{X.-S. Lin} [Invent. Math. 111, No. 2, 225--270 (1993; Zbl 0812.57011)], the author uses his invariant to prove that the Haefliger invariant is of order 2. Several other interesting results are also obtained.
